UCF Rosen College Students Become Virtual Hotel General Managers with PMI

Orlando, Fla. – March 12, 2013 – Many hospitality professionals spend years gaining experience before reaching top management. However, new technology at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management is helping students fast-track their careers.

The Performance Management Intelligence (PMI) software suite, created by global hospitality technology company d2o, allows students to act as virtual General Managers of a real-life hotel. Through a cloud-based platform, they receive live data and use it to manage hotels—handling budgeting, forecasting, staffing, food purchasing, occupancy, and stock control.

“This state-of-the-art technology lets our students apply theories to real-world business issues that general managers face daily,” said Dr. Abraham Pizam, dean of Rosen College. “It is fun, practical, and engaging—producing stronger hotel leaders and more marketable graduates.”

Beginning March 18, 2013, 20 selected students will join the program. First, they will complete a two-day boot camp. Next, they will compete against one another, supported by personal coaches, to run the most successful virtual hotel. As a result, students gain practical skills in leadership and decision-making. Furthermore, all participants will earn a certificate in Dynamic Performance Management Excellence, adding real value to their resumes.

The best student GM will also win an all-expense-paid trip to Norway to tour the Britannia Hotel and visit d2o’s headquarters. In addition, prizes will be awarded to other top-performing managers.

Rosen College is the first U.S. academic institution to use d2o’s technology. By managing labor and F&B resources in real time, hotels can prevent productivity loss and ensure sustainable profitability.

“We chose Rosen College because of their reputation for blending theory with real-world application,” said Kjell Gangdal, d2o’s Vice President of Education. “We are excited to see students embrace proactive management using our PMI solution.”
